The Limbara Butterfly Garden
A Paradise for Butterflies
In the heart of Mount Limbara, near Berchidda (OT), Forestas established the Limbara Butterfly Garden within the Limbara Sud forest complex, with the aim of protecting and promoting a rich and diverse entomological heritage, home to numerous rare species.
You can visit the garden from spring to autumn and observe butterflies flying freely, feeding on flower nectar or laying their eggs on host plants.
An Important Environmental Indicator
Butterflies are excellent ecological indicators, and their presence is a testament to the quality and integrity of Mount Limbara’s natural environment.
The Butterfly Garden also has an important educational role, raising awareness among visitors — particularly school groups — about the conservation and protection of butterflies.
Informative and illustrative materials allow visitors to learn about the different species, their biology, life cycles, and their role within different ecosystems.
The Biodiversity of Mount Limbara
The Limbara Massif preserves rich, diverse and largely untouched natural environments, characterised by an extraordinary variety of plant and animal species.
Some of the rare and endemic butterfly species found in Sardinia and on Mount Limbara include the Corsican Small Skipper, Sardinian Swallowtail, Sardinian Green-Striped White, Sardinian Peacock, Sardinian Fritillary, Corsican Blue, Aristaeus Grayling, Nuraghi Meadow Brown, Corsican Heath and Sardinian Wall Brown.Visiting the Butterfly Garden
Opened by the former Ente Foreste Sardegna on 14 June 2009, the Butterfly Garden welcomes visitors from spring to autumn.
It is open on weekdays from 8:30 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 16:00. Visits are also available at weekends and outside regular opening hours by appointment.
The garden is particularly well suited to school visits and organised groups. The Foresta Demaniale Limbara Sud is also home to the Mediterranean Arboretum, located at Sa Dispensa, which offers a range of environmental education activities.
Bookings and Information
To arrange a visit, it is advisable to submit a request at least one week in advance, and no later than three days before the planned visit.
The online request does not constitute an automatic booking. The visit must be confirmed by the Forestas representative, who will contact visitors by phone or email.
For information about organised and weekend visits, you can also contact the Berchidda Tourist Office (Tourism Sardinia Soc. Coop.), Piazza del Popolo 1.
How to Get There
The Butterfly Garden is located within the Foresta Demaniale Limbara Sud, approximately 4 km from the centre of Berchidda.
Follow the road from Berchidda towards Vallicciola. After around 3 km uphill, you will find the sign indicating the entrance to the Foresta Demaniale.
The road is accessible by car and small buses, although some short sections have an unpaved surface.
