Healing Plants, A Long Tradition in Sardinia

Nature as a Natural Pharmacy

During walks and hikes through beautiful Sardinia, you are sure to encounter the remarkable plants of the Mediterranean maquis, known for their distinctive flowers, colours and aromas.

Many of these plants are far more than simple shrubs. Sardinia has a long-standing tradition of medicinal and aromatic plants, used since ancient times for their beneficial properties.

Almost 400 Species with Beneficial Properties

Today, almost 400 different species are recognised for their natural properties, including anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antioxidant and balsamic effects. Traditionally, they have been used to prepare poultices, herbal infusions, decoctions, creams and syrups, as well as in cosmetics.

Among the best known are helichrysum, rosemary, thyme, strawberry tree, carob, bay laurel and myrtle — the latter also famous as the key ingredient of Sardinia’s traditional myrtle liqueur.

Ancient Knowledge, Passed Down Through Generations

Since ancient times, people have learned to appreciate the virtues of these plants and discover their uses through observation, experience and experimentation.

Not every part of a plant is used for the same purpose. Depending on its properties and intended use, roots, tubers, leaves, fruits and seeds may be collected separately. Each part also requires specific methods of harvesting, drying and preservation.

A Living Sardinian Tradition

Although few written records remain documenting the history and preparation of traditional Sardinian remedies and ointments, the knowledge of medicinal plants has always been deeply rooted in local culture.

It continues to survive in several Sardinian communities today, with methods and preparations often varying from one area to another.
